Character

At the age of twelve, Ishmael Beah's village got attacked by the rebels and the next following year he was put into the government army and quickly learned how he can go from a passionate loving boy to someone who is capable of wiping down a whole town with his AK-47. Another military group that takes over the town is the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). Ishmael enjoys rap music, hangout with his best friend Mohammed and his 5 brothers Junior, Talloi, Kaloko, Gibrilla, and Khalilou. As young boys pursuing an American future to be a rap artist, they dress like them. Sadly, Ishmael got out of school because his father could no longer pay for it. The youngest brother, Khalilou goes to school so her could learn about life and education. The boys all wear baggy jeans, soccer shorts underneath, long sleeves under their sleeve-less shirt and fold the bottom of their pants to tuck it into their sneakers. The group of boys are pretty much known in their village because of their helpfulness to people. Ishmael's mother, lives in the next town beside Mattru. His mother and father got divorced and the boys all live with his father and step-mom. The days their mother gets to see them she finds a big blessing. Aside from their family seperation, each character is happy and compassionate on their own.

  1. 1. Ishamel Beah is 12 years old.

    2. The rebels coming in to Mattru Jong affect the characters significantly.Everything becomes a matter of life or death, and the boys must flee, or be killed. They are also in danger of being forced to become rebel soldiers. It affects his family because it means Ishamel is now not able to return home, and the chance of him seeing his family again is highly unlikely. The boys now know how close the rebels are to them, and this creates a tense, dangerous mood.

    3. I think it's dangerous for his mother to be living in the next town, as the war will reach her first. The chances of her seeing Ishamel again are even more unlikely, as they are already seperated.

4.Ishmael is horrified by the dead bodies, as this is something he is not yet used too. He is filled with fear and shock.

5.Ishmael and the boys listen to American rap music.

6.No, Ishmael doesn't go to school because his family can't afford it.

    7. RUF stands for Revolutionary United Front.

    8. I would probably use the surrounding forests to my advantage.I would escape as quickly as I could to a nearby town, and similair to the boys, I would just keep travelling and try to distance myself from the rebels.

9.Ishmael has two brothers, one older and one younger. The older brother's name is Junior, and his younger brother's name is Ibrahim.

    10. I would leave town immediately, in fear of being forced to be a rebel soldier.

  2. Q:How old is Ismael Beah?
A: In the story Ismael Beah is twelve years old.

Q: How does the rebels coming into Mattru affect Ishmael and his family and friends?
A: When the rebels come to Manttru Jong, everyone was afraid. Parents looked for their children, and children looked for their parents. Eventually, parents and children had to separate to avoid getting killed by the rebels.

Q: Whats your opinion of Ishmael's mother living in the next town? Under the conditions their in, do you believe its safe?
A: I don't believe it is safe to be in any village or town. It would be safer to be in a city. In a city it is would be armed with military defence, while a village will have no military defence. The other option is to hide in a forest, where it is unlikely for rebels to invade a forest.

Q: How is Ishmael's initial reaction of seeing dead bodies on the ground?
A:He is sadden and hurt by the looks of the dead bodies. Some might say he was heart broken. Especially after seeing the survivors that arrived in the town they where just at. He takes note of one of the survivors which caught his eyes. She was a mother who was running with a baby carried on her back. The child had died because it was shot. Luckily for the mother she has lived, because the child was a shield.

Q: What kind of music does Ishmael and the boys listen to?
A: Ismael and his friends enjoy listening to rap music.

Q: Does Ishmael go to school? If no, why not?
A: Ismael gets out of school because his father could not afford to pay for it any more.

Q: What does RUF stand for?
A: RUF stands for Revolutionary United Front, a military group.

Q: How would you hide from the war?
A: It is most likely that I would end up dead, because I have no survival skills. If I were to try to hide from war. I would stay away with places with lots of people and weak defences, such as villages where rebels are likely to attack. I would also try to hide near a place where I can get resources (ie. water, food etc...) Places like forests or abandoned villages are ideal places to hide. The night is also the best time to be active. Since no one can really see at night.

Q: How many brothers does Ishmael have? What are their names?
A: Ibrahim and Junior are Ismael's brothers. Ibrahim is the youngest and lives with Ismael's mother. Junior is the oldest.

Q: If you were a young boy in Mattru and a war was coming, what would you do?
A: I would run, and try my best to survive. If I were to get caught by the rebels. I would hope for the best.

  3. [Edit]

I messed up on question seven. RUF isn't a military group its another name for the rebels. Woops my bad, misread the text.

note that there may be more mistakes in my answers

(Did not want to copy, paste, and delete because its a pain to re-bold words and to delete ...Typing out < b > and < / b > 20 times is to much work )

  4. 1. Ishmael is 12 years old.

    2. I think the rebels coming into Mattru Jong really affects the characters. I think because after this they don't really have a home anymore. They just keep walking and walking, trying to get away from all the madness. I also thinks it affects his family because now the family is separated. Ishmael, Junior, and their father already live separate from their mother and little brother. Also, Junior and Ishmael get separated later on in the novel.

    3. I think it's kind of sad that their family doesn't all live together, that they are all separated. I don't really think it's safe for Ishmael's mother and little brother, because they don't really have anybody to protect them.

    4. I think he is horrified because he's never seen anything like this before. I also think it saddens him that this war is bringing come many deaths to his country.

    5. Ishmael and his friends listen to rap music.

    6. Ishmael does not go to school because his father can't afford it. Ishmael's little brother is the only one who goes to school.

    7. RUF stands for Revolutionary United Front.

    8. I think I would kind of go with the boys strategy and try and stay in the forests. But I think I would walk far away from the direction of my village and find somewhere where I could stay in the forest.

    9. Ishmael has two brother; their names are Junior and Ibrahim.

    10. I think I would do the same thing as the boys and keep on the move and try and hide somewhere. I wouldn't hide in any of the villages because you never know when the rebels could attack. So I think I would find somewhere in the forest to hide.
